Supermodel Gia Marie Carangi born January 1960, died of AIDS, at the age 26, on Novemer 18, 1986 at 10 in the morning.
On November 21 1986, relatives and friends were invited to attend Gia’s funeral services.
She was laid to rest at Sunset Memorial Park in Feasterville, PA.
The industry in which she once had been so famous, so fast, had no idea she was even gone.
Even in her own hometown people didn’t know the end of her story.
Most people who knew her had no idea she was dead until a year later.
Everything was kept very quiet because the family was traumatised, and to say that a woman died of AIDS in 1986 was just unheard of, so it was never mentioned.
Gia Carangi was also seen on the cover page of style magazines like “Vogue in 1st April 1979; Vogue Paris in April, 1979.
American Vogue in August 1980; Italian Vogue in January, 1981 and many other issues of “Cosmopolitan” during 1979-1982”.
Later on, Gia Carangi was called as “Baby Gia” because of her similarity to “Carangi”.
She presented unusual poses, gestures and facial expressions for the first time in fashion industry.
After becoming addicted to drugs, Carangi`s modeling career rapidly declined.
She later became infected with HIV and died in Philadelphia.
Her death was not widely publicized and few people in the fashion industry knew of it.
Carangi is thought to be one of the first famous women to die of AIDS.
