- Necker Nymph: Sir Branson Unveils World’s First Underwater Plane
United Kingdom’s Business tycoon Sir Richard Branson has launched his underwater plane “Necker Nymph” for a journey to the bottom of the sea.
The Virgin Atlantic boss Sir Richard Branson hopes the submarine with fighter jet technology will explore unexplored depths at 35,000ft (10,668 metres).
Necker Nymph is a £415,000 carbon fiber prototype submersible capable of diving to depths of 35,000 130ft.
For now, the Hawkes Ocean Technologies built underwater plane will be available to Necker Island travelers prepared to shell out $113,000 ($25k/week for the Nymph, $88k/week to stay in the Necker Belle).
As the ‘aero’ part involves, the vehicle relies on “downward ‘lift’ on the wings” to work against its positive buoyancy during its two-hour dives, which probably means it can’t remain stationary underwater while you grab nearby weeds or whatnot in those open cockpits.
The Necker Nymph is available to hire for $25,000 a week, but only if your spend at least $88,000 for seven nights on the Necker Belle—we’re going to guess Sir Richard’s motto might be similar to “go big or go home.” The sub is expected to be delivered on February 20th of this year.
“Gliding on the water’s surface like an aeroplane on a runway, one of the three pilots will operate the joystick to smoothly dive down, and the thrilling experience begins,” the company says. “Uncover ancient shipwrecks, fly side-by-side with dolphins, or spyhop with whales; the options are endless.”
