Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) & Malaysia-based Scomi International today conduct the trial run of Mumbai’s first monorail on 61st Republic Day of India.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan flag of the test run of Mono Rail.

The trial run of Rs 2, 460 crore monorail project will be done on a 108 metre track at Wadala.

Malaysian born S Ponnadurai will test run the light blue rake of the monorail, which arrived in the city.

When it Monorail will becomes operational by the end of the year, the monorail trains will have only four coaches instead of eight cars.

This is because, say MMRDA engineers, the longer eight-car rakes will not be able to negotiate the sharp turns on the 20-km route from Jacob Circle to Chembur via Wadala.

Passenger capacity will therefore be reduced depriving over one lakh potential commuters every day.

Engineers of Larsen & Toubro, along with experts from Scomi, and consultants from Louis Berger, are busy giving the 110-metre test run the final touches for the past few days.

The ramp, near Aanik bus depot, stretches over 250 metres.
