Ford India to Launch its Small Car Ford Figo 2009.

Ford India will launch first small car for the Indian market, “Ford Figo.

“We believe Ford Figo is a big game-changer for Ford that will help transform our brand into a volume player in India,” said Michael Boneham, Ford India’s president and managing director.

Ford is concentrating their resources in what is becoming the most important market in the world.

Ford’s global president and chief executive Alan Mulally said, “The Figo is designed to compete in India’s small car segment, which accounts for more than 70 percent of the market”.

He added, ““Ford is reserving further details about the car till its launch in early 2010”.

The lone American automobile company that survived the downturn without a government bailout, Ford Motor is planning to integrate car designs globally and develop compact and mid-sized cars as part of a strategy to improve profitability and productivity.

The small car will be a four-door hatchback, powered by an indigenous diesel and petrol engine manufactured at its Chennai plant.

Ford India has invested around $500 million (Rs 2,400 crore) to double the current capacity by one lakh cars and 2.5 lakh engines.

Ford is emphasizing on achieving ‘Economies Of Scale’ and ‘one Ford’ strategy across markets.

Alan Mulally, president and CEO of Ford Motor, is also making a lightning visit to India to showcase its small car in the middle of this week.

Mr Mulally, who took over the reigns of Ford in 2006, divested marque brands Jaguar, Land Rover and Aston Martin before the collapse of the global markets.
